Name
Emma
Age: 12
Home State: Minnesota

Background:  Emma is a young piano prodigy who recently won the "Hang On to the Dream Music Competition" that was held at the Mall of America, besting over 30 other competitors.  Because of her incredible gift for music (she plays the cello just as well), her music lessons are too expensive for her parents to afford on a regular basis and they are doing what they can to help make ends meet.

Need:  Emma needs a sponsor who will help offset the costs of her music lessons, which is upwards of $100 per week.  Also, her mother informed our organization about something that Emma asks of her.  Emma has a 105 year old baby grand piano that she practices on at home.  It was given to her by an elderly lady in her neighborhood prior to her going into a nursing home.  As you might imagine, while it still works, it is in great need of repair.  Thus, Emma asks her mother to drive her to the local piano store so that she can sit a play some of the pieces she has learned on a Steinway piano.  She will often go there and play for a while until the manager politely asks her to leave.  It is the organization's "dream" to be able to give Emma a brand new piano of her own.

Name
Vanessa
Age: 17
Home State: Colorado

Background:  Vanessa amazed us all at the "Hang On to the Dream Search" that we recently held at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO.  She is an incredible dancer who has never had any formal training.  Completely self-taught when it comes to dance, she volunteers on the weekends teaching dance to young children in her community. Vanessa is a straight "A" student with a 4.0 GPA  who will be graduating next spring with honors, becoming the first member of her family to graduate high school.  She is a wonderful role model, and a true example of what you can accomplish if you push negativity aside and continue to "hang on to the dream".

Need:  At the event at Columbine, Vanessa wrote on her application that she needed a full length mirror and a radio because all she has had to practice with is a small mirror that sits atop her bedroom dresser and a karaoke machine that was in bad shape.  Before our staff left Colorado, we went out and purchased a full length mirror and cd player and delivered them to Vanessa on our way to the airport.  Her remaining dream is to improve her skills in every other type of dance besides hip-hop.  Growing up in a single-parent home does not allow her to afford dances classes, so any amount of sponsorship for this talented young dancer is very much needed and appreciated.

Name
Stephanie
Age: 12
Home State: Iowa

Background:  Stephanie is an extremely talented young lady who has had to overcome some tremendous obstacles to become the outstanding ice skater that she is today.  At the age of 9, Stephanie suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns while in the care of her parents, who were drug addicts. Stephanie's burns, left untreated by her parents, eventually became so infected that she had to be hospitalized.  Eventually the courts became involved and Stephanie's parents lost custody of her.  After 9 months in foster care,  she was adopted by her grandmother who enrolled Stephanie in ice skating classes to help give her something to focus on besides the loss of her parents.  One of Stephanie's 3rd grade teachers later told her grandmother not to remove her from her skating activities because the teacher had noticed a significant change in Stephanie's self confidence since beginning the skating lessons.  Displaying a talent years ahead of her age group, Stephanie has continued to excel on the ice.  Her goal is to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Stephanie's grandmother is currently the sole provider for the cost of her skating lessons and, due to  the high level that Stephanie has reached in her skating, it has become harder and harder for her grandmother to afford the cost of lessons and competitions.

Need:  Cost of lessons at $200/month, and $500 for competitions (approx. 3 competitions per year).
